Summer Gear Storage Tips For Winter

Ottawans all over town make the most of the short summer season, that includes breaking out the patio furniture, kayaks, canoes, motorcycles, boats, RVs and other toys. Unfortunately, when the short summers are over and the harsh winter comes (sometimes when it is only halfway through fall) these items can be damaged due to the weather conditions. Sometimes these items are built to withstand some of the abuse, but most of the time you are better off finding ways to protect them. You could buy covers which can be annoying to use and blow off in strong wind or use your own garage, but that may reduce the room you have to protect your car and it may already be crowded. So what are your options and preparations for storing summer items through the winter?

Storing Patio furniture

An Ottawa storage unit is perfect for storing all your summer toys when the snow comes, protecting them from unwanted damage. Patio furniture, especially if you get the nice stuff, can run a pretty penny and it is in your best interest to protect your investment so they can offer the same comfort year after year. The fluctuating winter temperatures can heat and cool them rapidly with snow and ice getting into small areas, potentially causing damage to your favourite outdoor items. Keeping them in a storage unit will keep them dry avoiding damage. A storage locker can come in a wide variety of sizes, being able to accommodate those who may only have a couple chairs on their deck, or enough loungers and tables for a neighbourhood pool party. Be sure to give them a good clean before storing them, wiping them clear of any dirt and debris and treating wood items with oil and varnish will eliminate the risk of any damage occurring during storage while maintaining their visual appeal as well.

Storing motorcycles

Aside from the obvious risks of storing your motorcycle outdoors in winter, with snow and ice potentially damaging components and increasing the risk of rust, the cold itself can be a danger for your bike. If you do not take the proper precautions, you may find it needs servicing or repairs before it will even start. Unlike cars, which are made to work in harsh conditions, bikes are not built with the intention of going out for a ride in -40C weather and snow. Before storage, much like patio furniture, treat your bike to a thorough cleaning. Dirt and other debris can trap moisture that will get into components and freeze, damaging them. Adding a wax treatment is not a bad idea for an added layer of protection. Ensure tires are at maximum pressure as well and consider visiting it every couple weeks to rotate them. Preparing the fuel tank by adding a stabilizer or draining it completely is also recommended. Replacing oil and all other fluids then running it for a short time before disengaging the battery will also keep components in good shape. This is all to protect it in cold temperatures, but a heated storage option at Acceptable Storage can help reduce the risk of damage occurring over the cold months.

Boat Storage

Boats, much like motor cycles, need similar care before being fully stored for the winter. Not properly preparing the boat will lead to damage and more maintenance once the spring comes and you want to hit the lake. You will want to wipe down and clean your boat top to bottom (we have a free washing station at our boat storage facility), removing dirt and debris that can cause damage in the cold weather. Applying a wax coat will do wonders as well if it will be stored outside. Draining engine block and manifolds, flushing with anti-freeze, along with adding stabilizer and fogging oil will keep your engine protected. Consider shrink wrapping the boat for added protection. Depending on your boat’s style, model, and manufacturer, there can be specifics that should be taken into account. Reference your boat’s manual or consult with an expert. Kayaks and canoes are much easier and should be thoroughly cleaned and waxed if appropriate to repel water from getting into cracks and freezing.

RV storage

RV winterization for storage is almost a combination of boats and motorcycles. The pipes need to be prepped with antifreeze, and RVs need a lot of it. Replacing oil and doing any maintenance work beforehand will reduce the risk of problems getting much worse come spring time. The electrical system needs to be turned off at the breaker and the battery disconnected before storing in a cool dry place. Any battery-operated devices (smoke detectors) should have the batteries removed and properly stored as well. Prepare the inside with a wipe down and clean, leaving the drawers and cupboards ajar. Remember to close all your windows and remove all food and anything else stored inside that would be subject to freezing. Close the blinds to protect the inside from sun damage as well. Clean and wax the exterior and you should be all set! As always, refer to your specific model’s manual for any nuances you might not be aware of.
